Finish the bag by making the strap and flap buttonholes as marked on the pattern (see page 17). Sew on buttons and toggle.

Tip

When threading a cord through a channel or toggle fastener, wind a piece of sticky tape round the end to prevent the cord from unravelling.

The child’s rucksack is slightly smaller than the adult version; it has fixed straps, no patch pocket and no side panels. The main body is made from a pair of stonewashed jeans and the contrast from a funky pink floral medium-weight cotton taken from a bedsheet. The rucksack has a butterfly motif appliquéd onto the body of the bag and is finished with seed beads. Use the adult main body, flap and placket pattern and the dimensions for the straps and drawstring that are given in the You Will Need list. It can be made up in the same way as the adult rucksack but omitting instructions for patch pocket, side panels, cord loops and adjustable straps. Instead, stitch the straps in position at the balance marks on the bottom seam. For a boy’s version, try using an olive-green corduroy with a dark green check contrast and a snail motif.
